Evidence-based Customized Ankle-Foot Orthosis with Energy Storage

چکیده

Three-dimensional printed ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) have been used in stroke patients recently, but there was little evidence of gait improvement. Here, we designed a novel customized AFO with energy storage, named Energy-Storage 3D Printed Ankle-Foot Orthosis (ESP-AFO), and investigated its effects on improvement patients. 12 survivors were recruited (9 females/3 males, age: 55.58 ± 5.9 y/o). Participants instructed to walk (1) bare foot (BF), (2) anterior (AAFO), (3) ESP-AFO, respectively. Gait analysis by the motion capture system performed bilaterally (SL: Sound limb; AL: Affected limb). Participant satisfaction fatigue also compared. We found that ESP-AFO significantly increased bilateral velocity 52.62 19.18 cm/s, BF 47.61 22.78 cm/s; 52.78 19.57 47.31 23.27 cm/s), stride length 78.96 19.16 cm, 74.89 21.92 cm; 79.06 17.82 74.08 21.31 cm). reversed drop-foot swing phase created higher ankle moment at terminal stance. Patients reported more (total satisfaction: 4.3 0.47, AAFO 3.3 0.62). demonstrated custom-made improved performance better than traditional AFOs did. (Registry number clinical trial: A-BR-106-005)

Customized 3D printed ankle-foot orthosis with adaptable carbon fibre composite spring joint

Neuromuscular disorders and injuries such as cerebral palsy and stroke often result in foot-drop which can result in a person having great difficulty walking. Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) or splints have been prescribed for many years now to limit the range of motion of the ankle, provide the patients with support and assist with rehabilitation. However the majority of AFOs require a long, labour...

Newly designed computer controlled knee-ankle-foot orthosis (Intelligent Orthosis).

The authors have developed a knee-ankle-foot orthosis with a joint unit that controls knee movements using a microcomputer (Intelligent Orthosis). The Intelligent Orthosis was applied to normal subjects and patients, and gait analysis was performed. In the gait cycle, the ratio of the stance phase to the swing phase was less in gait with the knee locked using a knee-ankle-foot orthosis than in ...

A new hip-knee-ankle-foot sling: kinematic comparison with a traditional ankle-foot orthosis.

In this study, we performed a kinematic analysis of a new, low-cost sling for the lower limb, compared to a common ankle-foot orthosis (AFO). Gait with no orthosis, with the AFO, and with the new sling was analyzed in one hemiplegic subject. Both the AFO and the sling reduced the mean angle and ROM (range of movement) of the ankle and the vertical displacement of the center of mass. The sling, ...

Neuromechanical adaptation to hopping with an elastic ankle-foot orthosis.

When humans hop or run on different surfaces, they adjust their effective leg stiffness to offset changes in surface stiffness. As a result, the overall stiffness of the leg-surface series combination remains independent of surface stiffness. The purpose of this study was to determine whether humans make a similar adjustment when springs are placed in parallel with the leg via a lower limb orth...

Development of an ankle-foot orthosis with an oil damper.

The purpose of the present study was to develop an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) that satisfies the requirements for an AFO for patients with hemiplegia as determined in a previous study. An oil damper has been introduced as an assistive device. The oil damper provides a resistive moment to plantar flexion of the ankle joint during initial stance on the paretic side. This function improves the insu...
